In Kozhikode, amid heightened surveillance in Malappuram district following a Nipah infection death, a man from Othayi, Edavanna panchayat, has been admitted to Manjeri Govt Medical College Hospital with suspected symptoms of Mpox, caused by the monkeypox virus. The 38-year-old recently returned from Dubai and sought medical attention at a local dermatology OP for fever and skin rashes. Upon examination of his symptoms and travel history, doctors admitted him for observation. Samples have been sent for testing at the virology lab in Kozhikode. Health authorities are awaiting PCR test results, expected to be available by Wednesday evening. Health Minister Veena George stated that the man isolated himself upon suspicion of illness and has been separated from family members. The World Health Organization declared Mpox a global health emergency due to a new strain, Clade 1, spreading in Africa. While a recent case was reported in Haryana, no confirmed cases of the new Mpox strain have been identified in India.A current public health emergency, as reported by the World Health Organization (WHO), concerns Clade 1 of Mpox. Mpox is the result of infection with the monkeypox virus (MPXV), an enveloped double-stranded DNA virus belonging to the Orthopoxvirus genus in the Poxviridae family. The virus is categorized into two distinct clades: Clade I (with subclades 1a and 1b) and Clade 2 (with subclades 2a and 2b). Mpox can be transmitted through close contact with infected individuals, contaminated materials, or infected animals. Common symptoms of Mpox include rashes, fever, sore throat, headache, muscle aches, and swollen lymph nodes.
